Music-making is a widely shared human experience going back at least 35,000 years.
On this module, you’ll explore:
- why people make music together
- the benefits of music-making in ensembles
- a cultural, scientific, psychological, educational and political perspective.
You’ll study these questions through:
- interactive lectures on the benefits of music-making in groups
- a wide range of ensemble case studies
- taking part in music ensemble practical workshops
- writing a reflective report.
You’ll need to have an active interest in taking part in music ensemble workshops, but you can also be a beginner musician.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of music-making in ensembles contexts and histories.
- Demonstrate knowledge of current research on the meaning and value of music-making in ensembles from a range of perspectives.
- Collaborate in a music-making ensemble.
- Draw together histories and research on the power and social impacts of music-making to inform a reflective report.
