Music-making is a widely shared human experience going back at least 35,000 years.

On this module, you’ll explore:

  • why people make music together
  • the benefits of music-making in ensembles
  • a cultural, scientific, psychological, educational and political perspective.

You’ll study these questions through:

  • interactive lectures on the benefits of music-making in groups
  • a wide range of ensemble case studies
  • taking part in music ensemble practical workshops
  • writing a reflective report.

You’ll need to have an active interest in taking part in music ensemble workshops, but you can also be a beginner musician.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of music-making in ensembles contexts and histories.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current research on the meaning and value of music-making in ensembles from a range of perspectives.
  • Collaborate in a music-making ensemble.
  • Draw together histories and research on the power and social impacts of music-making to inform a reflective report.
